Raw Food "Cooking" Class with Susan S. Collins

You're Invited!

Please be our guest for a raw food "cooking" class presented by Susan S. Collins, author of The Household Carnivore and past VHRC speaker. She will be demonstrating how to prepare a raw food diet for your dog and cat. She will be bringing meat, veggies, meat grinders...the works. This demo will enable you to go home and feel confident with the preparation process. This is a great sequel to our prior lecture with Susan a few months back.

DATE: September 10, 2006
TIME: 11:00 AM-12:30 PM
LOCATION: 360 Maple Avenue West - Suites A & B, Vienna, VA 22180
Cost: $20 per person.

Please RSVP to the Veterinary Holistic & Rehab Center at 703-938-2563. Space is limited. We look forward to seeing you.

VHRC Lecture: Raw Food for Dogs and Cats

You're Invited!

Susan Collins will be discussing the benefits of a raw food diet, which include weight control, improved immune system, fewer fleas and ticks, etc. She will also instruct you on how to start feeding your pet a raw food diet; how to prepare it; and make recipe suggestions.

For those of you that may not be ready to feed a raw diet to your dog or cat, but are interested in cooking at home for your pet...This would be a good lecture to attend. Most of the lecture would still apply, but the food would simply be cooked instead of feeding raw.

DATE: Sunday June 25th
TIME: 11am-1pm
LOCATION: 360 Maple Avenue West, Vienna
Cost: $5/person for lecture. Materials Optional: $25

Please RSVP to the Veterinary Holistic & Rehab Center at 703-938-2563. Space is limited. We look forward to seeing you.

Pets in Disasters

You're Invited! -- To my party for PETS.

On June 11 I am hosting an event to benefit the Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF) the lobbying arm of the Humane Society of the United States. With your help, we can help them pass a law to protect animals in disasters.

Hurricane Katrina forced many people to make a horrible choice: abandon your animals and live, or stay with them and face an uncertain fate. Because state and federal evacuation plans did not include a comprehensive plan for dealing with animals, thousands died. If we work together, we can help pass legislation that requires disaster plans to include animals so we never have a tragedy of Katrina's magnitude again. Please join me at my party to learn more about the Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act) and the HSLF.

Please RSVP (by clicking the link below) "yes" and make your contribution to the Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF). All funds raised from my party will go directly to the HSLF's work to pass humane legislation, including measures to pass the PETS Act.

If you are busy and can't attend, I understand. RSVP "no" but please consider making a contribution to the HSLF and help me achieve my fundraising goal.

Still on the fence? Click the "maybe" RSVP button. Please consider making a contribution anyway to help protect pets from future disasters.

The Veterinary Holistic & Rehabiliation Center will be serving drinks and appetizers. Come join us in saving animals from future disasters like Katrina.

P.S. Donations to the Humane Society Legislative Fund are used exclusively to press for new laws to protect animals from cruelty and therefore are not tax deductible.

Meet Maxi

maxi

Maxi is a patient of VHRC that first touched our hearts on September 27th, 2005 when she came in for an evaluation with Dr. Danoff. Maxi was 4 months old at that time and was unable to use any of her limbs-she was a quadraplegic that was under the care of a local rescue group.

Unfortunately, Maxi had a rough life. She was born normal, but by 2 1/2 months of age, she became a quadraplegic. It was not due to trauma. In fact, she is a very unusual case. She got parvo, which is a virus that causes very terrible vomiting and diarrhea and can make dogs so sick, that they could die.

From her immune system being "out of wack", she acquired an uncommon condition called immune mediated polymyositis. This means that there was inflammation in all of her muscles in her body. This causes severe pain. As a result, she did not walk. And secondary to being non-mobile as a growing puppy, all of her joints contracted and she lost what muscle she did have and did not develop additional muscles.

When Dr. Danoff met her, her heart melted, as did the entire staff here at VHRC. We knew we had to help her. She is now in our care and lives with us, but goes home with Dr. Danoff just about every night. Dr. Danoff initially offered to treat her for 4 weeks at no charge. But after getting to know Maxi and realizing that her therapy would take months if not a year or more, she simply could not deny her the chance of relearning to walk again.

Maxi currently gets a variety of therapies each week. These include the use of natural foods, supplements, herbs, and homeopathics; underwater treadmill; manual stretching; up in our hoist; braces for all 4 of her legs to fight the contractures; and more. Dr. Danoff has taken Maxi down to the Chi Institute in Florida for an herbal consult, where she was also evaluated by Dr. Chrisman (a neurologist); to Dr. Marcellin who is a surgeon at NCSU and has his own rehab facility in Raleigh, etc. All felt she was quite an unusual and challenging case, but had potential with a lot of time and effort.

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
A Documentary

  • "That rare documentary that has romance, comedy and a surprise ending that makes you feel like you could fly out of the theater..."-San Jose Mercury News

"This remarkable movie is the true story of a Bohemian St. Francis and his remarkable relationship with a flock of wild red-and-green parrots. Mark Bittner, a dharma bum*, former street musician in San Francisco, falls in with the flock as he searches for meaning in his life, unaware that the wild parrots will bring him everything he needs."

*Dharma bum (per Gary Snyder): "A homeless seeker of truth"

Directed by Judy Irving. Starring Mark Bittner and avian stars Mingus, Connor, Picasso, Sophie, Olive, Pushkin and Tupelo. Rated G.

This movie will have you laughing out loud; crying from joy and sadness; teach you about the complexities of parrot interactions; and about life. It is a great film to take your family and kids to see. You do not need to be a parrot lover to enjoy this movie.

If after seeing this movie, you find these creatures cute and entertaining, please visit www.avianwelfare.org before considering sharing your home with one.
