  • Name: Daisy
  • Age at Evaluation: 10 years
  • Breed: Beagle
  • Evaluation Date: 1/15/04
  • Presenting Complaint: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), eating frenzies, pica
  • History: Daisy was having eating frenzies 2 times per week where she would eat everything in sight including non-food items like carpeting, etc. She had a thorough work-up by a 2 internists who diagnosed her with lymphocytic plasmacytic gastroenteritis and recommended steroid therapy. Client did not want to use steroids due to long term side effects.
  • Exam Findings: Slightly overweight, possible arthritis in knee
  • Goals: To resolve IBD.
  • Treatment Plan: Natural foods, multi-vitamin, probiotics, glutamine, omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil), antioxidants.
  • Outcome: Clinical signs have all resolved.
  • Latest Update: Daisy is a normal dog. She no longer has any signs of inflammatory bowel disease and has not had any feeding frenzies or episodes of pica since therapy was initiated.
Bianca
  • Name: Bianca
  • Age at Evaluation: 13 years
  • Breed: Siamese
  • Evaluation Date: 1/30/04
  • Presenting Complaint: Chronic asthma
  • History: Had asthma for several years. Not responding to inhalants, bronchodilators, or prednisone. Poor appetite. Losing weight. Exam Findings: Normal lung sounds and respiratory rate. Body condition score of 3-4/9 (thin).
  • Goals: To resolve asthma and increase her weight.
  • Treatment Plan: natural foods, vitamins, probiotics, fish oil, Accolate (leukotriene inhibitor), elimination of potential allergens from environment.
  • Outcome: Clinical signs have resolved with treatment and she is now feeling better and putting on weight with a body condition score of 5/9 (ideal weight).
  • Latest Update: As of 4/5/05, Bianca's signs have resolved, except for one very short coughing episode when she was off of the Accolate prior to refilling the prescription.
  • Name: Walter
  • Age at Evaluation: 1 year
  • Breed: Feline Domestic Short Hair
  • Evaluation Date: 12/10/03
  • Presenting Complaint: Feline Leukemia Virus
  • History: Walter was rescued by Four Paws Cat Rescue and in foster care when he began vomiting. Bloodwork showed he had a very low white blood cell count, anemia, low platelets. He was referred to an internist for a thorough evaluation where he had a bone marrow aspirate. He was leukemia positive on bone marrow and bone marrow was not producing adequate numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets. His bone marrow had pre-cancerous cells (>15% lymphoblasts) within it. He was given a very poor prognosis and sent home on prednisone.
  • Exam Findings: Normal physical exam
  • Goals: To resolve bone marrow abnormalities and support his immune system so he can clear the virus from his body Treatment Plan: Discontinued steroids, Poly-MVA, omega 3 fatty acids, natural foods, probiotics
  • Outcome: On 1/27/04, Walter had bloodwork and a bone marrow aspirate repeated. All tests came back completely normal and he is now leukemia negative!
  • Latest Update: As of 4/6/04, Walter remains a healthy cat. He is due for another bone marrow aspirate and leukemia testing in a couple of months to verify the results. If his bone marrow is normal and negative for leukemia, he will be placed up for adoption.
